USEHAZUS Launches Expanded Website

Published on Jan 20, 2009

Today I am proud to announce the launch of the expanded USEHAZUS website.  The goal of this expanded version is to bring users of HAZUS software together by creating an online community for them.  To create this sense of community the new website incorporates three main components:

  • Forums where users can post and answer questions
  • A wiki that acts as a growing knowledge base of user submitted content
  • Member profiles where users can connect directly with each other

I built the expanded website using the ExpressionEngine content management system.  All content on the website can now be edited directly by the client. In addition to this control and the features mentioned above, I also leveraged ExpressionEngine for the following:

  • Mailing list software to send bulk emails to the community
  • Event listings of upcoming nationwide HAZUS events
  • Search engine friendly URLs
  • Content versioning for easy correction of typos

The redesigned website remains standards compliant, and all traffic can be monitored in detail thanks to an implementation of Google Analytics. Worth noting, since the new website went live it has seen a nearly 60% increase in traffic thanks to these new features.

Why Web Standards?

Simple visual consistency

Because content and style are separated a style change made in one location affects content across the entire site.

Better search engine results

With the code being much more compact, search engines can easily read content and will display better results for you.

Website maintenance less expensive

With visual appearance controlled by a single file maintenance becomes a breeze. No more changing dozens of individual pages.

Accessibility to all devices

Cell phones, pdas, screen readers — a standards based website will render better in these than a traditional tables based website.
