Book Review: Web Design for ROI

Published on Apr 22, 2009

The days of having a website to have a website have come and gone.  And if you realize this and are looking to get more out of your website I can highly recommend Web Design for ROI by Lance Loveday & Sandra Niehaus.

Excellent Website Advice

The book is broken into three main sections:

  • The Big Picture - Covers everything from the website design process to setting goals to focusing on a return on investment.
  • Design Guidelines - Goes thoroughly through best practices on how to design the different pages of a website with very clear, practical advice.
  • Resources - Additional books and websites to refer to to dig deeper into topics covered in the book.

The advice found in the book is excellent.  The big picture idea is that small changes can made a big difference (like I mentioned in my post, Put Website Refinements To Work For You).  It also makes the point that website revisions can be measured for their effectiveness using website analytics.

The book is easy to read and has a lot of supporting charts and images to walk you through exactly what the authors are talking about in terms of design guidelines.  I particularly liked the “Stop reading and try this ...” features that give readers very hands on actions they can take immediately with their own websites.  The book does a good job keeping everything practical and never gets bogged down in overly technical language.

Conclusion

A must read.  The authors clearly know their subject and the principles in this book will help all website owners understand little steps they can make to make a positive difference with their website.

Why Web Standards?

Simple visual consistency

Because content and style are separated a style change made in one location affects content across the entire site.

Better search engine results

With the code being much more compact, search engines can easily read content and will display better results for you.

Website maintenance less expensive

With visual appearance controlled by a single file maintenance becomes a breeze. No more changing dozens of individual pages.

Accessibility to all devices

Cell phones, pdas, screen readers — a standards based website will render better in these than a traditional tables based website.
